Single Moms Inspired for Life's Extremes, INC.

Yvonne is a rose who grew from concrete.

I am a Black mother of four daughters and grandmother of a granddaughter and grandson. I believe that the mentoring I received created the foundation for me to become a mentor for so many who reach out for help. I am a teacher, author, preacher, and certified pastoral counselor.

In 2012, I founded SMI (Single Moms Inspired) and an established Non-profit in 2014, after my cousin Kendrya was murdered and my daughter who had an IEP diagnosis of intellectually gifted, faced discrimination at Martin Luther King Magnet School in Nashville, Tennessee.

Through advocating for myself and other Black mothers, I recognized the systemic underrepresentation of Black single mothers in nearly every space and made it my mission to create a platform for support, empowerment, and visibility.

I also believe that God is a Black woman, and she is the one who gives me strength to continue my mission: to inspire more Back Single mothers who face life’s extremes.

Single Moms InSPired For Life'S Extremes

Black single mothers face many systemic challenges, yet they demonstrate remarkable strength and resilience. That strength that can often become exhausting. In 2023, 47% of Black mothers were single mothers, compared to 21% of all mothers nationwide (American Progress).

Black Single Mothers face so many systemic barriers such as racial discrimination, economic instability, and limited access to quality healthcare and education. In 2023, 28.4% of Black female-headed families lived in poverty, significantly higher than the national average for single-mother families (Single Mother Guide).

Despite the struggle, Black single mothers, like you and me, consistently display extraordinary courage, persevering to provide for our families while nurturing support and empowerment within our communities. In 2023, 79.5% of Black mothers with children under 18 participated in the labor force, compared to 73.5% of White mothers (BLS).

Through Single Moms Inspired (SMI), I am committed to creating a platform that amplifies the voice, provide resources, and empower Black single mothers to navigate systemic barriers with mental strength, resilience, and hope that she is a winner despite what anyone may think!-Yvonne

Yvonne's Promise

Yvonne promises to be there for each Black woman.
Yvonne is going to do her best to walk alongside each woman on their journey if that is the woman's choice.

Yvonne's ultimate goal is to help each woman grow through their life's extremes, accomplish their life goals, and remind them, "it's a process."

As an outcome, each woman will be able to pay forward what they have learned while becoming all that God purposed her to be.

A 31 Day Devotional for Black Single Mothers

The Whole Truth: A Talk with God is a collection of devotionals I wrote between the ages of 33 and 37. Each devotional will activate within you the urge to pray and journal more; and help you understand that God is not a one stop and does not fit inside our rigid religious box.

Written from the perspective of a Black single mother (myself), these devotionals reveal how talking to God empowered me to lean on Scripture, which enabled me to press through some moments I didn't think I could manage. But now that I have seen the righteous forsaken and God's seed begging for bread, my perspective has expanded. I see a deplorable socioeconomic society that would rather see a Black single mother sink than swim. Nevertheless, the God I serve not only listens attentively to our pleas, but also guides us on a path to gain the resources we need to pull up our bootstraps,
